Title: Race, Animals & : A Case of Sacrifice, Sensory Politics & Public Space in South

Abstract: In South , the new constitution was designed to accommodate all of South ’s religious traditions. The result is a novel configuration wherein is articulated with race and public space by private actors rather than through coherent state policy. This talk introduces two cases of public sacrifice in South . In the first, the presence of animal bodies led to a racially charged debate over sanitation, animal rights, and the proper use of public space. In the second a combination of scholars, activists and artists engaged in a public in a bid to cleanse the nation of racial divisions. Through ritual sacrifice they asserted the value of African and universal access to public space.
