Religion has been used to manipulate Africans into poverty PLO LUMUMBA
PLO LUMUMBA – Religion has been used to manipulate Africans into poverty. In one of his speeches, Professor PLO Lumumba, a well-known Kenyan lawyer, and political activist, spoke about how religion has been used to manipulate Africans into poverty. He stated that many African religious leaders have used religion as a tool to control and exploit the masses, which has led to widespread poverty and suffering on the continent. He argued that religion should not be used to justify oppression and inequality, but rather as a means of promoting peace, justice, and equality for all people.
Additionally, Prof Lumumba argued that Africa’s problems cannot be blamed solely on religion, but on a lack of good governance and corruption among African leaders. He called for a new era of leadership in Africa, one that is transparent, accountable, and committed to the well-being of the people. He urged Africans to reject leaders who use religion to justify their actions and instead support leaders who will work towards the betterment of the continent. His speech has been widely shared on social media and has sparked a lot of discussions and debates on the role of religion in Africa.

8 months agoChristianity was born in the Middle East, not Europe. Jesus' disciple Philip baptized a eunuch from Ethiopia in water near the road going from Jerusalem to Gaza shortly after Christ's crucifixion. Christianity first arrived in North Africa, in the 1st or early 2nd century AD. The Coptic Church in Egypt traces its history to the Apostle Thomas and Mark the gospel writer in the first century. The Christian communities in North Africa were among the earliest in the world. Ethiopian King Ezana made Christianity the kingdom's official religion in the 4th century CE. In the 7th century, Christianity remained the chosen religion of the Ethiopian Empire and persisted in pockets of North Africa. A lot of influential Church fathers and leaders like Origen, Athanasius, and Augustine were Africans.
So no, Christianity did not first come to Africa from Europe and predates colonialism in Africa by over 1,000 years.
Sadly, unfortunately, and regrettably, quite a few Europeans who claimed to be Christian and who claimed to speak in the name of Jesus, did not act in Christlike ways, thereby taking the Lord's name in vain, and setting back the economies of African nations.
However, this is different than saying that Christianity is the cause of African poverty today. That is an over-simplification.

8 months agoLumumba says that the Roman Catholics called themselves Roman Catholics in Africa instead of African Catholics. And? They are called Roman Catholics on every continent, including in Europe. Anglicans are not called the African Anglicans nor are Baptists called African Baptists. Are Muslims in Africa called the African Muslims? Hindus called the African Hindus?

8 months agoThe title of this video is misleading, manipulative 'clickbait'. In THIS video, Lumumba talks about the sins of the colonialists, yes, but does not make an explicit argument that Africa's Christianity is the cause of its poverty. Perhaps Professor Lumumba makes this case elsewhere but he does not in this video.

8 months agoI chatted with many Africans on social media. Other than the rest of the Christian world they mention God in every second sentence. Non African Christians may do that occasionally nut not as penetrant as Africans. Second observation. Shared Bible quotations among Africans on social media are almost all from Old Testament. Very very few from New Testament. Same in this video. Only one quotation from New Testament but many from Old Testament.
So Africans are poor because they don't read the Bible and they don't read the bible because of social media? So why were they already poor before social media exist?
