King Ezana of Aksum
King Ezana of Aksum
What if a single ruler could change the course of an entire kingdom’s faith? King Ezana of Aksum did just that, becoming the first Aksumite king to convert to Christianity and making it the state religion. King Ezana ruled the Kingdom of Aksum, a powerful ancient African empire located in present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. His reign marked a turning point when he embraced Christianity in the early 4th century AD, influenced by his childhood tutor, a Christian bishop named Frumentius. Ezana declared Christianity the official religion of Aksum, making it one of the earliest Christian kingdoms in the world. He built churches and established Aksum as a center of Christian faith in Africa, forging close ties with the Roman Empire. Ezana’s conversion not only transformed Aksum’s culture and identity but also spread Christianity throughout the region, leaving a lasting religious legacy.
