US President Donald Trump claimed that Christians are being systematically killed in Nigeria, saying “They’re killing the Christians and killing them in very large numbers.”

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu responded that “the characterization of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality,” and said his government is committed to working with the US and international community to protect all faiths.

Trump’s comments have sparked concern in Nigeria, with some experts saying they reflect a lack of understanding about the country’s complex security issues and may be motivated by a desire to cater to his evangelical base in the US.
