U.S. Army Sergeant Recalls Harrowing Combat in Vietnam and Near-Death Experience
Terrence Bucklew was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Initially trained in communications, Bucklew accepted many different assignments on his lengthy deployment to Vietnam – from field wireman to door gunner to running night ambushes.
Bucklew offers his raw history of service in Vietnam, including how he woke up inside a body bag and his frustrations with the rules of engagement, which Bucklew says prevented a decisive U.S. victory.

4 years agoMy nearest enemy was twenty feet distant. Whispering to another below
our shared military horizon. I hand-signaled my issued dog to stay still
and quiet. I waited for someone I could dead using one hand on my un-
locked M-16. The other hand would tell my animal to attack silently.

4 years agoAfter such a dramatic entrance into Vietnam with your airplane having to ditch it's emergency slides and all those top secret 72B20 having to scamper down the runway to dive into a ditch. I bet that was exciting. How many jobs did you have anyway? Lets see, you climbed telephone poles, you were a bunker bunny, a helicopter door gunner, you rode shotgun on convoys. Oh yeah, you went out with the infantry on night ambushes. Mustn't forget about that. We all know how accommodating the Army was in finding a job that you were comfortable with. Did I miss anything? Oh yeah, amazing how quickly they promoted you to sergeant. The Army know a born leader when they see one I guess. You never stayed in a job long enough to learn it so I really don't know how you rate a promotion. They even thought they killed you but you fooled them. You came back to life and clawed your way through a body bag. Those body bags were pretty air tight and you would have ran out of oxygen very fast. They also don't have a zipper tag on the inside making it impossible to unzip from the inside. Too bad you don't remember anything about that. I bet that was quite an experience. After all that you must be raking in 100% disability PTSD. That's $3500.00 a month tax free from Uncle Sam. Lucky you. Too bad AVC gave you only about 15 minutes to tell us your tale of heroism and sacrifice.

4 years agoThis was has gotta go down as the most shameful thing a government has done…those rules of engagement from above was to prolong the war as alot of money was being made. The rules of engagement along the boarder of Cambodia etc. Disgusting act of greed from our government. These solders deserve to be honored indefinitely

4 years agoNEVER TRUST THE MEDIA, SCHOOLS OR GOVT!
I was born during the vietnam era. This is the first time hearing that our troops had to fight back constant waves of women and children soldiers.
The media, schools & govt spread the same propaganda that our soldiers were simply child murderers.
Sickening!
If they can get away with that, what are they getting away with today that they are lying about?
And who is paying the same psychological price today that our troops paid after Vietnam?

4 years agoAs an Iraq veteran I feel the same way. We left and allowed everyone who trusted us enough to help us be slaughtered by ISIS. We left our weapons there to be used by the enemy to undo any good we had accomplished. Nobody cares. Afganistan, the same thing only maybe even worse because we left some of our people there to find their own way home and allowed the Taliban to dictate our withdrawal, the how and the when. Disgraful and frankly, embarrassing.
