“Jews, Christians, and Muslims all use the word Amen, but its first use was in ancient Egypt. Amun, the greatest of Egyptian gods, was invoked with the phrase “By Amun!”
In Hebrew usage, some posit that the word came to mean “so be it.” Other linguists believe that the Hebraic use of “Amen” derives from aman, a primitive root that means “to be firm, confirmed, believe.” Regardless of its origin, the word “amen” appears in the Hebrew Scriptures in different grammatical contexts, demonstrating that it was a firmly entrenched linguistic element. In Jewish liturgy, “Amen” is a communal response, an individual charge, and a sacred acronym that signifies “God, trustworthy king.”
“Amen” entered the Christian lexicon through the Greek language, and is also found in the Christian Scriptures, expressing a kind of certainty not found in the Hebrew Scriptures or practice. In the early church, “Amen” meant that the people had ratified what the priest had prayed.
