PT1 Whitey supremacy in church cults live
White supremacy in Black churches exists because many of those churches—whether in Africa, the Caribbean, or the diaspora—were built on colonial missionary structures, theology, and power systems that center whiteness as the standard of legitimacy, beauty, and authority.
Here’s how it shows up:
⸻
1. Colonial Christianity’s Blueprint Still Runs the Church
• Missionaries didn’t just bring the gospel—they brought Eurocentric theology, white images of Jesus, and Western cultural norms.
• These norms became the template for what a “holy” church looks like: white robes, European music styles, English-language preaching, and “proper” Western etiquette.
• Black churches, even when led by Black pastors, often still follow that colonial blueprint without realizing it’s rooted in white supremacy.
⸻
2. Worship of the White Image of God
• Many Black churches still depict Jesus, angels, and biblical figures as white, even in majority-Black congregations.
• This sends the subliminal message: God is white, holiness looks white, heaven is white-coded.
• Over time, members internalize that closeness to whiteness is closeness to God.
⸻
3. Favoring White-Approved Theology
• Sermons often overemphasize submission, obedience, and suffering—values missionaries used to control colonized people.
• Liberation theology (which connects Christianity to dismantling oppression) is often avoided or demonized, because it challenges white political and theological dominance.
• Preachers may quote white theologians more than African or diaspora scholars, keeping white authority centered.
⸻
4. Colorism & Leadership Hierarchies
• In some Black churches, lighter-skinned people or those with European features are given more visibility in choirs, leadership, or public-facing roles.
• Visiting white pastors or missionaries are treated as VIPs, often outranking local Black leaders in authority and respect.
⸻
5. Western Gatekeeping of Legitimacy
• Black churches sometimes measure their success by validation from white evangelical networks—partnerships, conferences, or endorsements from famous white pastors.
• If a Black church looks, sounds, and operates like a white megachurch, it’s often considered “successful” and “blessed.”
⸻
6. Suppression of African Spirituality
• African cultural expressions—drumming, dance, traditional dress—are sometimes labeled “worldly” or “demonic.”
• This creates shame around African heritage and pushes people toward white-coded worship styles.
⸻
Why This is Dangerous
• It perpetuates self-hatred and internalized oppression within Black spaces.
• It keeps white institutions at the top of the Christian power structure.
• It erases African and diaspora expressions of Christianity that are equally valid and deeply rooted.
