The appearance—and disappearance—of cults, sects and other fringe groups is surprisingly common in American history. These groups are typically exclusive and narrowly focused, and based in aberrant social or theological ideologies.
Some cults are psychologically damaging, a few are violent, and some of the worst have been totally imaginary. But most cults are actually benign, and considered important by their members.
All cults require members to sacrifice some things of personal value, like family relationships or material wealth.
Why do people join cults? This talk provides some answers, based on a review of a variety of representative groups from different historical periods.
