Bellevue officer's near-death experience leads to changes in emergency benefits policy

It has been more than a year since Bellevue Motorcycle Officer Kevin Bereta sustained severe injuries during a visit from Vice President Kamala Harris.

In August of last year, Bereta was in the VP’s motorcade when he hit the side of an onramp and tumbled to the interstate below.

Bereta has also defied the odds and has now returned to work at the police department.

Bereta said being there for his family and coming back to the department was what kept him focused on his mission to recover. And it was his recovery that turned into a moment of change. Early this year, the city of Bellevue was accused of leaving him without health benefits following his injury.
