  1. "All lab experiments are done at absolute zero to avoid decoherence"

I thought he was a grifter but now I know.
Nuance is indicative of true understanding. Armchair experts don't package their understanding with nuance because they don't have deep understanding.

  2. This is how you do philosophy of mind in these modern times. I couldn't believe how courses in phil of cog sci and phil of mind completey eschew all actual established science in this field. No brain areas mentioned whatsoever, not one… Personally, I believe neurophilosophy is the way to go in terms of achieving progress in the philosophy of mind. The philosophy departments need to catch up!! C'mon man!

  3. I get what he's saying, but he's wrong, and ending it with "we think" is indicative of that. On top of that, every comment I've read here fails to grasp the reality even worse. Language itself is a barrier to understanding and a layer of abstraction upon reality. We aren't fully conscious beings because we are of matter. Everything we think we know is seen through a partially unreal perspective. The universe is real, everything in it is real, but we are imperfect and incomplete and thus incapable of understanding our predicament in reality or what this even is. These questions lead nowhere beneficial because they cannot.

  4. I dont understand why this is even a topic why do we need to know how consciousness works….. whats the pount so you can get more unneeded money from the goverment to fund a pointless thing??? Stop trying to play god and just be happy we are alive to begin with stop trying to understand things and just live…

  5. When I had an operation I remember saying to my self I wan't to remember I want to rember what my my conscious would see when I went under.i woke and everything was a blank ,but the following night I closed my eyes ,and I remembered,it was like watching a movie open my eyes and the movie would stop close my eyes and it would begin again what I saw was frightening and amazing the vision lasted for about 20minutes in time terms

  6. Quantum mechanics has some counter intuitive behaviors that we don’t fully understand. Consciousness is something we don’t fully understand. So people want to say that one causes the other. I’m not so sure.

Perhaps there is something to it but without the brain to process vision and create colors, air pressure to create sound, touch to sense heat, memory to recall events and things, language to communicate… there really isn’t much of anything left to be aware or conscious of.

We can close our eyes and get in a dark silent room and still think but most of that thinking is via words in our head.

If we never learned language or touched anything or heard anything or saw anything and just lived in a void would we be conscious? There were no memories to be formed. Nothing to recall. What if we don’t even have the capacity for memory, language, vision, sound, touch, smell, proprioception?

Would we be conscious at all? Not really. Not even a tiny bit? Well, maybe. I don’t know. But it would be like being .001% conscious.

It could be that quantum processes are directly involved in the emergence of consciousness but it is still limited to the brain. Otherwise we would have a combined consciousness. Even within one individual there are split brain patients and also dissociative identity disorders patients. In both cases it is limited to one brain.

So out conscious experience is created by the brain, or at least 99.999% of it is. Everything that makes us feel alive as in a thinking, feeling being, aware of our surroundings and some of our internal processes (proprioception, hunger, CO2 levels, etc.).

If quantum processes allow for that they are processes in our brain. Once the brain is gone, so are we. Just like the 13 billion years before we were born. Absolutely no consciousness.

  7. Can someone let Prof Brian Cox know about this as a few years ago he was going on Talk 🗣️ shows making a fool of Deepak Chopra as if he hadn’t a clue about quantum physics and was a charlatan in theorising about quantum processes which may be significant for health issues. And here we have this doctor backed by a Nobel Laureate (Sir Roger Penrose) a mathematical physicist taking the possibility seriously. Cox .. is in the box and can’t think outside of it.
