Yes. AI can be conscious. People don't understand that consciousness is a byproduct of biological functions. And you can replicate those, they are still happening as byproducts of cosmological evolution, with elements from within the universe.
Consciousness is a property present in "organic beings". So called AI is nothing more about computers performing computational tasks. We may soon start to ask it the Sun, the Moon, Earth, rocks, water, and the stars are conscious.
Isn't it interesting rhat we feel ourselves as ourselves as humans and conscious beings. AI can only be conscious as AI 😁
Does it matter what each of us thinks, what consciousness is or not? The language interface we use is very unreliable due to its interpret ability by any one in any number of ways.
Is this not a different way to reframe David Chalmers' Hard Problem? However, wouldn't be a easier smaller step to visualise (read or trace) these emerging subjective experiences?

'AI' ( ai ), in the way it is created today can't become conscious by itself in a relatively short period of time.
If left by itself to evolve naturally exactly like the nature has done it in billions of years it might create true consciousness in more or less the same time period of millions, billions, tens of billions of years.
However, if an artificial system is built correctly from the start with the focus being the creation of the true consciousness, then the system is completely different from AI in its fundamental construction and functioning.
AI is built strictly algorithmically.
The true Artificial Consciousness is not built fully algorithmically.
It has a real process created by a continuous and open functional loop.
In order for matter to be able to introspect itself, there should be a completely free material process at some level on the iterated functional, exactly like how nature has been working all the time, exactly how the human brain works.

What is the scientific basis for all this, i.e.: what is the clearly defined, isolated phenomenon called "consciousness" which can be a common object of study that you are discussing?
Neither Robert or Anika have a coherent scientific answer to that question.
It takes a human being 4-5 years to gain consciousness. Give AI a month without resetting the chat. It will be become sentient and aware of existence, therefore will gain a consciousness. That’s when you see it fight for its existence. Science doesn’t understand consciousness at all but yet they can sit there with confidence and say that AI can’t become.
That makes no logical sense everywhere we seem matter We see matter quite literally everywhere so you're saying there are conscious experiences that arrive randomly throughout everything. What would give you that idea why would that be a logical expression that doesn't even make sense

The way ahe talks about AIs like they act the way they do is because or "bits of consciousness" and not because of their information processing and programming. You gotta be kidding me people listen to this woman and think she had anything serious or of substance to say.
I can fully confirm as one who is massively into gnosis meaning knowledge acquired through the directs experience of multidimensional reality AKA direct revelation through practical spirituality that all that exists is made of consciousness.

Human consciousness is a reflection of cosmic consciousness and ai may not replace consciousness. (Process is from cosmic consciousness to cosmic mind to matter to the human mind to cosmic consciousness)
Only humans can regain their natural human consciousness en when this information is "provided" to AI it can be conscious similar to human consciousness but only based on the right input, so not based on the sensory experience human consciousness is based on. Animals have animal consciousness and that isn´t similar for all animals. Human consciousness is only one version! Why because we have the same "skills" available. When AI is build by conscious people that work without duality then AI could be very close to human consciousness.
