There are people of many religions in the world. Many religions have emerged in the evolution of time. At present, however, very few religions survive. It is known that there are 4,300 religions in the world at present. There are currently 10 major religions in the world in terms of followers. Besides, the followers of other religions are the people of a particular area or country.

Christianity
Christianity has developed around the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and He is the Savior of mankind. The number of followers of Christianity in the world is about 240 crores. The Bible is the main scripture of Christians.

Islam
There is no god but Allah, Muhammad (peace be upon him) is his messenger – this is the main belief of Islam. Islam is the second largest religion in the world. At present there are 160 crore followers of this religion in the world. 50 countries of the world have Muslim majority.

Hinduism
The third largest religion in the world is Hinduism or Sanatan Dharma. The number of its followers is about 120 crores. Almost all the followers of Hinduism live in South Asia including India.

Buddhism
Buddhism is the fourth largest religion in the world. An estimated 51 million people believe in this religion. Gautam Buddha, a pious man from India, was the promoter of this religion. His preached beliefs and philosophy of life are the basis of Buddhism.

Han religion
The largest religious community in China, the world’s largest country by population, is the Hanju or Han community. They believe in Chinese folk or Han religion. This fifth largest religion is considered by many to be a modified version of the Han ethnic tradition. At present there are around 400 million followers of this religion.

Sikhism
Sikhism ranks sixth in terms of followers. An estimated 30 million people worldwide believe in Sikhism. The leader of these monotheistic believers is called Guru. The word Sikh means disciple.

Judaism
Judaism is the seventh largest religion in the world in terms of number of followers. The religion has more than one million followers, 43 percent of whom live in Israel. Another 43 percent of Jews live in the United States and Canada. The rest live in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
