5 Mind-Blowing Differences Between Sephardic & Ashkenazi Jews | Big Jewish Ideas
While about 93% of American Jews identify with Ashkenazi heritage, Israel and the globe are home to a diverse mix of Sephardic, Mizrahi, and other Jewish communities.
Yet, media often presents an Ashkenormative image, overshadowing the reality that a significant number of Jews worldwide don’t fit into this category.
In North America, the major Jewish communities are Ashkenazi – with ties to countries like Germany, France, and Eastern Europe – and Sephardic, from Portugal and Spain. But that’s just part of the story – globally, there exists a vibrant mosaic of other Jewish cultures, including Mizrahi Jews from the Middle East, Ethiopian Jews, and numerous others.
Despite their unique languages, cuisines, and even some Jewish customs, all these groups share the core connection of Judaism and are part of a singular, global peoplehood.

1 year agoFor those asking about the origins of Jews, sorry for the confusion! This video talks about the divergence and development of the Ashkenazi and Sefardi groups. They all originated in the land of Israel, when they were all just Jews (or actually, part of 12 different Biblical tribes). Following different exiles, when some Jews were exiled to the Iberian Peninsula, and some to the Danube Valley, Rhineland areas, and subsequently other parts of Europe, they started developing into the group we call "Sefardi" and "Ashkenazi" – so that’s where those named groups originate from. We unpack it more in this video, with a more accurate map: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw0G9COpeMY&t=24s

1 year agoMy dad is Ashkenazi and my mom is Sephardic, but I never really got to experience Sephardic culture because my grandma (who converted to Judaism in her 20s) didn’t know anything about the food, etc, and my grandfather died when I was two and my mom never learned how to make the food and all that, I dont even think my grandpa knew how to. On the other side, my dads mom makes food and celebrations all the time.

1 year ago"Sephardic Jews originally came from Portugal and Spain" (wihile highlighting the entire Middle East and North Africa. You have a channel that can be used to spread peace, so why do you keep ignoring any potential for good detail about Arabs/Muslims? Ignoring that Sephardic Jews often lived much better in the Middle East and North Africa than Ashkenazi Jews in Europe. While the reason is apparent (living within a religion that deems you responsible for crucifying their prophet), it can also be seen in the emergence of movements. As your video pointed, External difficulties have often led to the emergence of religious movements rather than their absence within a religion.

1 year agoThe sheer lunacy of giving a religious group, a European religious group at that, a land mass, on the truly repugnant insane idea that a God, who doesn't exist and never has, gave it to a particular religious group, is now, finally been seen by the world as an epic mistake….
Theism is humanities greatest failure, and only when the dark age lunacy is finally discarded, as it should have been, long ,long ago….
Sick, in the most epic, vile sort of way…..

1 year agoWow, this is only digging a couple inches deep. Ashkenazi Jews originated in the area we now called the Ukraine. They are not genetically Jewish, but took on the Jewish religion as a necessity, many hundreds of years ago. The original culture was from a region called Kazaria. A quick research into the Kazarian culture will reveal a lot to those interested. This knowledge needs to be spread. It will clarify a lot concerning history and regional events today.

1 year agoI grew up in an Ashkenazi home. I had absolutely no knowledge of Sephardim. Next door to our Ashkenazi Knesset (Haverat Yisrael in Queens) was another Knesset, but the people looked different, and it smelled funny from the food they served. They might as well have been another religion, I had no idea who they were, except that our old-timers would say, "It's from another country, that one." Then one day we all went in there for Simchat Torah, and I was shocked! Everything was different. My friends dismissively said, "That's Sephardic," and my mother said, "They're Bukharian." I was like, "How come nobody ever told me about this?!?" The reason? My family thought Sephardic, Persian, Moroccan, and other non-Ashkenazim were sleazeballs.

1 year agoI'm a particular fan of the not-Zionist variety. You know, like the Jewish Voices for Peace Jews, the Not in Our Name Jews, the orthodox Jews, and the ones refusing to fight with the IDF. -by the way, there was never an "Israel." It has always been Palestine.
