WATCH: Rapper AKA was on a spiritual journey – Kabelo Mabalane
Kabelo Mabalane told mourners at the Sandton Convention Centre that he had the pleasure of being the rapper’s mentoring pastor since last year.
Award-winning rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes was on a spiritual journey to finding himself under the guardianship of musician-turned-pastor Kabelo Mabalane since last year.
Starting the memorial service in prayer, Mabalane told mourners at the Sandton Convention Centre that he had the pleasure of being the rapper’s mentoring pastor since last year.
Mabalane said:
I had the absolute privilege of walking a journey with Kiernan because I always see a bit of myself in any one of these younger, successful guys in the industry. My heart goes out to them whenever I see them entangled in trying to navigate the very trope waters of success that come with this business.
Mabalane added: “I personally go to the end where I, myself, had made a complete mess of my life and the lives of others. It was only when the grace of God afforded me an opportunity to make a connection between the gift and the giver of the gift. When we don’t make a connection between the gift and the giver of that gift, abuse of ourselves and others is inevitable.”
Forbes was shot and killed on Friday night outside a popular Italian eatery, Wish, in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
His friend and former manager, Tebello Tbiz Motsoane, was also killed in the shooting.
The memorial service, which started just after 4pm, began on an emotional note as the Forbes family sat at the designated family area next to the rapper’s girlfriend, Nadia Nakai, the mother of his only child and musician, DJ Zinhle, and his daughter, Kairo.
Forbes’ father, Tony, and Nakai were inconsolable when the memorial started.
Mabalane said:
As mentioned, I had the privilege of being Kiernan’s spiritual mentor and pastoral oversight. Watching him grow in the last year was one of my greatest pleasures and hearing his mom, Lynn, say Kiernan in recent times was the son she knew and the son she raised, this was proof that we don’t need to get proof, to get God.
Mabalane added that the musician at their last home cell revealed that he wanted them to pray for his upcoming album, Mass Country, to do well when it’s released this month.
Forbes will be buried in a private funeral on Saturday.
