Using Christianity as a deceitful weapon, they converted and controlled the Congolese people. By baptizing King Nzinga Kuwu in 1492 and renaming him Joao I, they set a precedent of replacing African identities with Portuguese ones. This paved the way for widespread enslavement and the spread of Christianity across Africa.
