Spirituality & Yoga for Black Bodies | OnePeopleTO Conversations
Listen to Tilly Bee, a Black Yogi and Ital Foodie, based in London UK, , speak on how she sought out a decolonized teaching experience when deciding to learn yoga, what yoga has done for her mind, soul & body as well as how her practice has grown over the years.
“In Tilly’s words:
What continued to surprise me about the practice was the lack of diversity in the Yoga world. I had only ever had one teacher of colour until travelling in Central America, and was often the only person of colour in the class. I wished for more people to feel the benefits and the healing that I’d felt in a more inclusive and safe space.
I grew up with in a mixed heritage household guided by my incredibly selfless, inspiring, beautifully strong, smart and spiritual powerhouse of a mother from England, and my wild, crazy, poetic guitar-playing, deeply spiritual, book-obsessed, Rasta father. They both played a huge influence on my love for life, respect for nature, consciousness in diet, and using natural remedies before western practices.
After exploring many artistry’s from design to fashion to film production I kept coming back to yoga. So in 2019 I decided to complete my 200 hour teacher training in Hatha Sampoorna Yoga.
My main aim in the flows is to create a space where no matter your colour, gender, age and whatever your belief systems are, you feel safe, welcomed, supported, loved and energised. I want you to feel part of a community, where you are able to explore, be vulnerable and become stronger. I want to help bring a consciousness to self, and to guide you in acknowledging and overstanding the mind and body.”
