The Ugandan Cult That Burned 700 People Alive
In the late 1980s, Uganda saw the rise of Credonia Mwerinde, a former prostitute turned self-proclaimed prophet. Claiming visions from the Virgin Mary, she warned of an imminent apocalypse and, alongside Joseph Kibweteere, founded the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God.
Members lived under absolute control—silence, daily confessions, and abandoning all possessions. But as the year 2000 approached, Mwerinde’s prophecies turned dark.
When the end of the world didn’t come, the leaders staged one of the worst cult massacres in history, killing hundreds in a fiery church inferno.
