Ethiopia holds one of history’s most forgotten, yet most beautiful stories. When Islam was just beginning in the burning sands of Arabia, its early followers were hunted, beaten, and left without refuge. But across the Red Sea stood a Christian king — the Negus of Aksum — who offered protection when no one else would.

This moment, known as the First Hijra (Migration) to Abyssinia, made Ethiopia the first sanctuary of Islam. The Muslim refugees, led by Ja’far ibn Abi Talib, recited verses from the Qur’an about Mary and Jesus before the Negus. The Christian king wept, declaring: “By God, these people will never be handed over. Here, they are safe.”

It was in Ethiopia that the values of faith, justice, humanity, and compassion rose above borders and religion. A Christian kingdom protected Islam, proving that humanity is greater than division.

إثيوبيا تحمل واحدة من أعظم وأجمل القصص المنسية في التاريخ. في بداية الإسلام، حين كان أتباع النبي ﷺ يتعرضون في مكة للاضطهاد، الضرب، والطرد بلا مأوى، أشار عليهم الرسول ﷺ بالهجرة إلى أرض ملك عادل “لا يُظلم عنده أحد”.

تلك الأرض كانت الحبشة (إثيوبيا اليوم)، وذلك الملك كان النجاشي ملك أكسوم. عبر عشرات المسلمين البحر الأحمر مرهقين، خائفين، لكنهم حملوا إيمانهم معهم. وعندما وقف جعفر بن أبي طالب أمام النجاشي، قرأ عليه آيات من القرآن عن مريم عليها السلام والمسيح عيسى عليه السلام. فبكى النجاشي وقال: “والله لا أسلمهم إليكم، لهم عندي الأمان.”

هكذا أصبحت إثيوبيا أول ملجأ للإسلام، وأول وطن آمن للمسلمين خارج الجزيرة العربية. هذه القصة تثبت أن الإنسانية والعدل يمكن أن تتجاوز الدين والحدود، حيث فتح ملك مسيحي أبواب بلاده لحماية المسلمين، فكتب بذلك صفحة مضيئة من التاريخ الإسلامي والإفريقي.
