Via Crucis or Way of the Cross. Its held every year in Marinduque 🇵🇭 at the Moriones Festival.

Christian tradition holds that Gestas was on the cross to the left of Jesus and Dismas was on the cross to the right of Jesus.

The Moriones Festival began during the Spanish colonial times when Father Dionisio Santiago, a priest in Mogpog, Marinduque, envisioned a unique way to celebrate Holy Week. He initiated a tradition where men dressed up as Roman soldiers and wore masks and helmets.

One of the highlights of this festival is the Via Crucis. A re-enactment of the suffering of Christ on his way to the calvary. Men inflict suffering upon themselves by whipping their backs, carrying a wooden cross and sometimes even crucifixion. They see this act as their form of atonement for their sins.

The festival remembers the suffering, crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
