Greg Koukl and Tim Barnett respond to Alex O’Connor’s claim that humanity’s drive for meaning emerged through a random mutation of ideas operating at a genetic level. They explain that this argument commits a category error by treating ideas and consciousness as biological mutations. Because evolution cannot explain consciousness itself, it cannot explain the meaning and moral content found within consciousness.
