Is it possible to experience God without participating in an organized religion? Ross Douthat argues that while it’s possible, ignoring religious traditions just makes it more difficult to be receptive to God. The author of “Believe: Why Everyone Should Be Religious” explores the popular idea of being spiritual but not religious, and why younger generations are becoming more open to the idea of God.

Religion has caused more death, murder, destruction throughout history and causes division. Spirit, the holy spirit, the great spirit whatever you want to define it as has existed since before Religion was created as a means of control
You either have a spirit or are totally soulless, the spirit behind a person is either good or malicious and this is defined by their actions not words. So, you kill a child on purpose, that would indicate the spirit behind and in control of your vessel is demonic
The question therefore should be, the problem with religion not understanding itself nor what came before it
People knock "religion" as a mere human endeavor – and then smugly (and often unknowingly) turn politics into their religion! A truly human endeavor!
God is best revealed and understood through the Catholic faith
I always heard this in AA. I even useto say it until I was born again. Thats why I stopped going to aa. especially with this new age movement. Basically stealing everything from the Bible (without realizing it) and not having Christ in it. Sorry but if I can make God who I want, then Satan wins. He fooled me enough for me to believe I have my own god. And never surrendered to Jesus Christ
What is unspoken here is the massive and hugely disorienting impact of the demographic transformation of the West. "England", "France" and "America" are unrecognizable entities compared to their longstanding histories. Now more like the Holy Roman Empire compared to the Latin Roman Empire.
I think the church has left its first mission to worship and proselytize. They are trying to become socially relevant, in extra curricular activities, church schools that cater to middle class America have left the inner cities and serve suburbia. In the churches that are in the inner city, do not have traditional worship do not Shepherd the congregation in the right way to worship in 1: the confession of sins 2: the announcement of absolution the forgiveness of sins ; then you’re ready to worship God for what he’s done for you. You go into a modern inner city church and it’s all praising God, but they don’t tell you what for they have left off the traditional observance of worship. In the application of law and gospel. Nobody wants to hear the law anymore. They just wanna hear Jesus loves you.
I hear this quote all the time mostly from liberals. It's basically cherry picking the "nice" easy parts of traditional faith, and ignoring the hard and difficult teachings, even those from Jesus himself (Christian). It's also a way to incorporate a lot of new age superstitions and occult in thier lives and still be considered kinda Christian. I have a couple of friends like that, one says she's Buddhist, but dabbles in crystals and tarot, and she should know the Buddha said those practices are just nonsense, and the supposedly Christian one also believes things are wicca. Wicca was made up in the 1970s.
We're all religious. It’s what we believe in and worship that’s different
Saying right a lot means you’re super smart… right?!
When things get weird the weird go pro…
All organized religion is a form of brainwashing, conditioning minds, based on fear and reward.
Those quoting Satan??? 😂 It's the 21st century, evil exists because of man not through him. Catholic Church is full if paedophiles, christians kill people and rape people everyday and beat their kids, muslims blow themselves up, Jews are committing genocide as we speak. See a trend here??? Religion is a fkin disease and ' anyone ' who commits evil, nasty acts needs to take ownership for it. Reliogion is a pile of if dog shit, worship nature, look after animals and care for each other, be kind and I di this without religion in my life screwing up my brain with guilt, fear, obligation, submission. FREE YOUR MINDS. I'm a good decent human being without any religion in my life, its not needed.
1:39 I agree with the guest point overall but a lot of the people that you ask are either going to just say "yes I'm religious" or "no I'm an atheist" , most of the ones that can say "I'm spiritual but not religious" are the ones that have thought about it enough ,intuited enough, experienced enough and felt enough to make the claim legitimately.
I am one of the people that can make that claim, I realize that my lens on the world does come from a Christian culture but other views on the world comes from a spiritual identity, the realization that I have come to recently is that when people make this claim they're coming from the point of view that Christ's Spirit is one thing and the corrupted institutions of Christ are something else. So therefore I'm spiritual but not religious.
G is protected beyond this reality.
He has no understanding of what ‘spiritual but not religious’ means. It’s interesting to observe how articulate idiots can be.
Just more humans trying to tell other humans what to think .
Religion and Racism … two branches from the same tree
The religious saying spirituality has problems? Lmao might wanna sort your own problems out before pointing the finger! One big blinding problem with religion is where is your invisible magic man in the sky? Doesnt exist without belief which just so happens to be a requirement…funny that eh? 😂
I really like this Guy. One of the most balanced Commentators I have heard to date. Best religious culture commentary!
Can you blame people for thinking there is something really wonderful going on in the story of Jesus Christ, a God that has so much compassion and love and asks the best of me and shows me that he is a god worth worshiping. And then you read the creeds and the ideas and the dogma that came hundreds of years later and you think that seems a little crazy. God is unknowable? That’s not the god I saw in the New Testament God has no body? That’s not the god that was walking around Palestine. God created most humans just so they would suffer eternally in hell? That’s not the god of love I read about who calls all men to come under him and who died for all men. You don’t have to do anything for salvation just say a prayer? The Jesus I read about and the apostles I read about, got up every morning, trying to be better and working hard And we’re working out there salvation and we’re working with God and accepting his grace and his infinite atonement to transform them and help them in a synergetic exercise of faith and complete allegiance God stop talking? He doesn’t want to resolve any of our issues? He thinks 2000 year-old documents that we don’t know who wrote them is sufficient to run his church and he’s OK with 50,000 Christian denominations who have different ideas? That’s not the plea for one I read about in the New Testament. That’s not the promise I heard from Christ that you will know that you’re a Christian and the world will know that you are Christians because you are one. I think spiritual might mean I believe what I’m reading about Jesus, and religious might meanI’m not down with all this preacher stuff. I’m hearing happy to talk more if anyone wants to know the religion I have found an actual organization that claims apostolic authority and a structure, like Jesus established in the New Testament.
This is so important.
As one who knows how the mainstream Christians religions have corrupted themselves. But as a Holy Spirit moved person, I do still believe in God and Jesus. So I do agree there is a problem with those who have a problem with the "Spiritual, not Religious." I hope and pray all will pray to awaken with the Holy Spirit, then please consider being moved by the Holy Spirit. Thank you.
Sheilaism. That's what it is; Sheilaism.

I will never bow down to the Jesus Idol, American Evangelicals created.
Spirituality is not about being a “genius,” Ross. It’s about genuine spiritual feeling. Which has nothing to do with being smarter or more intellectually advanced than anybody else.
