Ikoma Shōten: The Contract Between Desire and Divinity
From Osaka, a train climbs toward Ikoma. Then a cable car. Then a steep path. At the summit, a great torii gate stands—not as decoration, but as a defense system, still operational, holding back a torrent of sacred force.
At the heart of Hōzan-ji Temple lies Hannyakutsu, the Wisdom Cave—a boulder radiating presence since the days of En no Gyōja. Here, the deity Kangiten (Shōten-sama) does not reject human desire. Wealth, success, carnal love—all are swallowed, transformed, and circulated as purified energy.
There is a secret ritual: Yokuyuku. Boiling oil, poured endlessly over the deity. Not as an offering, but as maintenance. The immense energy of worldly benefit this deity grants cannot be controlled without it.
This is not a place of peace. It is a contract. Taut. Binding. A pact between the divine and the human, built on fear and need. The gods demand everything. And in return, they give everything.

Within the grounds of Ikoma Shōten (Hōzan-ji), it's not uncommon to see rows of stone monuments inscribed with "1 million yen donations"—offerings of gratitude from entrepreneurs who achieved great success in their businesses.
