Former Skeptic Who Studied 1,500 Near-Death Experiences

A pastor and author who has investigated more than 1,000 near-death experiences believes there’s definitive evidence that many of these experiences are authentic. John Burke, who co-authored “Imagine the of Heaven Devotional: 60 Reflections on the Heart of from the Bible and Near-Death Experiences” with his wife, Kathy, told that he was once a skeptic.

“Not only did I not believe in near-death experiences, I didn’t believe in Jesus or ,” he said. “Many … decades ago, my dad was dying of cancer and someone gave him the very first research that coined the term near-death experience.” Burke said this came in the form of a book, which he ended up reading. At the time, Burke wanted evidence — and the book provided just that: stories of people who were clinically dead and resuscitated. Among the stories, he noticed many of those experiencing NDEs claimed to have seen Jesus.

“That really began my whole faith journey, because so many saw Jesus,” he said. “I was like, ‘I better be open to the Bible. So I started reading, and studying the Bible, came to faith.” That was the start not only of Burke’s faith journey, but also his foray into NDEs. Over time, his intrigue bloomed into an investigation of 1,500 real-life cases. His previous book, “Imagine the God of Heaven,” was a hit, sparked much conversation about these important stories.

“What I write about is how the commonalities really do relate to the Bible and what the Bible’s expectation of heaven, of hell, of God,” Burke said.

  1. I would say that some near death experiences might be true, but our focus as Christians should not be on them, nor should they be the basis for our faith in God. Our faith, which in itself is a gift of God, should be focused on the Word of God and the gospel of Christ, for it is God alone who is both the author and finisher of our faith. Hebrews 12:2.

  5. Almost every NDE story I’ve heard that describes Heaven has elements that conflict with scripture. Most other stories involving entities/angels have them telling people they are righteous/God is happy with them/don’t fear death it’s all going to be ok, etc., when these people aren’t even Christ followers. The entities are deceiving spirits pointing people away from the Gospel and into works-based Christian cults at best.

Most of these experiences and how they’re described, “more real than real”, sound just like many psychedelic drug experience stories. You meet angelic beings, or other entities, who tell you things you want to hear and everything feels more real than real, and it feels like a place you want to be.

Some say that in high doses, those drugs simulate an NDE to your brain putting one in a state between life and death which somehow pierces into the spiritual realm, ”the air”, that demonic powers inhabit. Eastern religions (although, these practices are being brought into the western Church) use different methods like meditation to get the brain into that state, some Native American religions use psychedelic drugs like peyote to enter that state. People who practice mysticism in one form or another are trying to experience “enlightenment” or to meet the ancestors or the gods.

Id like to hear about an NDE that came from God and not the Deceiver, there may be some I haven’t heard yet (I guess I’d have to read their book) but so far I haven’t heard one that aligns with what scripture says about, God, Heaven, mankind and the gospel. Be extremely skeptical of visions like these.

  6. Yeah believe in him he's real that's right he's real he sits on the throne in heaven he sits in a glass building a huge massive glass building like the size of the Sistine chapel I tell you believe in him he's real I bear witness I give testimony to the truth.

  7. Jesus himself says very few will enter into heaven do you know why that is because the people do not believe in him they will not ask for him so they will not enter it this was written and so it shall be done.

  8. The name of Jesus will go throughout the globe I tell you this his name will be known everywhere in China in Russia in Korea he will be known all over the globe Iran his voice his name will be known.

  9. It's a lot more than piece it's eternal life eternal living forever the things you remember you will do whatever your heart's desire you will have I tell you this believe in what I tell you he will give you all that you want and then more.

  10. This heaven is a different dimension I tell you this that we are not able to access but it is real it will be more real than you realize when you see it you will believe you you will not know the difference between your life today and where you are going and how you're walking it'll be the same I tell you that it's believe me.

  11. His light is like the sunlight I tell you this it's just like the sunlight you will not know the difference it will feel the same on your skin it's the same feeling of the Sun.

  12. “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.” — Steve Jobs (Jobs’ biological sister Mona Simpson reported these being Jobs last words before he died.)

“It is very beautiful over there!” — Thomas Edison (These words were reported as being spoken by Edison’s by his physician days before he died as he awoke from a nap and gazed upward.)

  13. It’s striking how many people with no faith background encounter the same reality in NDEs. If so many independent stories point toward something beyond this life, maybe the bigger question isn’t whether the afterlife is real, but whether we’re prepared for it.

  14. Where life truly begins.
    Bathed in God's love.
THEY CAME BACK WITH A PIECE OF GOD IN THEM.
    Their never the same.
    Jesus said:
If you can't understand the earthly things then how can you possibly understand the heavenly things !!!

  15. After I was saved and reading the Word, I was often struck by how feminine certain behaviors were on display by God, especially when it came to errant Israel. God sounded like a jilted female lover, weeping over the unfaithfulness and pleading for Israel's return. Since then, I have come to recognize that Holy Spirit really acts motherly in that He hovers, births, comforts, nurtures with the same general characteristics that we ascribe to females. This has led me to believe that Adam was neither male nor female originally but represented God's image which has elements of male and female. When God separated out male and female characteristics to create a male and female Adam, the pair together represented the fullness of the image of God insofar as could be by flesh as the original Adam did. So when the two were joined together, they were called "one flesh."
So glad that John and Kathy pointed out the motherly characteristics of God revealed in the NDEs. That's not to say we should think of God as female since maleness indicates authority, protection, source, and provider.

  16. My mother was resuscitated, and while she was still unconscious, my sister heard her talking and laughing with Jesus. When mom woke up, my sister asked her, "Mom, were you talking to Jesus?" And mom smiled and replied, "Yes, Jesus. I love Him." Sadly, my sister died from cancer a couple of years later, but before she died (at 48), she told us that she wasn't worried, because she KNEW where she was going. A couple of years later, my mom died (at 90), in the nursing home, during covid. The nurse said she asked for a bite to eat and a drink of water, then smiled and seemed to just peacefully fall asleep. I thank Jesus Christ that He guided my meek, kind, mother so gently to Heaven. ❤🙏

  17. A comment was made from the writer that a man had a NDE found himself in Hell cried out to Jesus and Jesus "saved him" out of it
This statement goes against everything written in the Word of God Luke 16 Hebrews 9v27 Isaiah 8v20 – To the Law and to the testimony. If they do not speak according to this word there is no light in them. I have a choice do I believe in the word of God or in the word of man when there is a contradiction also the statement was made more outside the church believe in NDE than inside the church easy to understand those outside the church do not have or believe the scriptures and want to believe if there's a heaven if there's a God He will accept me scripture is clear John 14v6 the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ. As "encouraging" these accounts are when people's experiences don't line up with God's Word then as a born-again believer I 100% believe the bible

  18. I experienced an NDE 48 years ago. It was the most impactfull experience of my life and yet, I was exiting this life when it occured! I will only relay one thing to you and it is this…Our Heavenly Father is for us, not against us! It is by His will that we even exist. It is true that in Him we live and move and have our being. We do not create ourselves, nor do we exist apart from Him. We do not save ourselves or keep ourselves. Lay all your cares on Him, because He cares for you! On that day, you will discover this! Live your life in light of the fact that it matters to Him what happens to you. Spend your life treasuring Him as you are treasured, forgiving each other as He has forgiven you through Christ Jesus

  19. I learned of a similar experience, a "nearing death awareness" as some people move closer to their death. When my doctor knew that I would be caring for my Uncle, she gave me a copy of "Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs, and Communications of the Dying" by Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley, two hospice nurses. They notice three points that impacted my care of and relationship with my dear uncle.
    • As people approach their death, the world ahead of them becomes more real as this world gets less real. I stopped correcting him about where he has. No more, "No, you're in the hospital." No more fretting when the patient no longer recognizes loved ones; they're just much more aware of what, and sometimes who, is ahead.
    • People often begin to mention a mode of transportation. Just go with it! My uncle's was a train. After I told him that I had a ticket, too, but my train was scheduled for a little later, and I asked if I could sit with him, both of us were blessed with a comfortable and closer relationship as we waited for his train to Heaven.
    • People, given the opportunity, often choose the moment of their death. Mom may wait until her son arrives from afar. Dad may wait until Mom is out of the room, perhaps to spare her the experience of their separation. Knowing this, I let my uncle know each time I had to leave the room, and how long I expected to be away.

  20. I died when I was 15 years old, I didn’t know about salvation I was catholic, and I was sick. I started having stomach issues and I remember that I got up in the middle of the night and after using the bathroom I felt weak and I passed out. I saw my body in the floor and at the blink of an eye I was in a dark place seat in a rustic wooden chair while a suddenly saw a light and a men’s hand with long white trumpet sleeve and the index finger pointing at me and I when back to my body ande when I open my eyes my parents and siblings were around me trying to resuscitate me it. I confirmed with my mother the position of my body on the floor. With the Holy Spirit revealed to me that it was God's will to return to my body; it wasn't my time.

  21. This past summer I was at my lowest and in tears begged God that if he’s real to reveal himself to me. Then I heard an audible voice say “my son, I love you”. Shortly after that my YouTube algorithm randomly started introducing me to John Burke and his interviews. Now I know for certain that Jesus is real. Pretty incredible when not long ago I was an atheist and miserable. Thank you Jesus.

  22. Having been thru NDE heart attack first thing i noticed was the peace no pain. Being out of the body, was like life here is like a dream. Our real home is being with our God Father Savior all in one. Back home. I asked why did I leave my home to be a human being to no answer. When we leave to go back home we will get the answer.
