but how do you sing religious songs with, e.g. mormons or christians, without feeling disconnected? I once went to an event and they sang mantras about gods, and I wanted to be part of the community, but I really felt alienated by the content and by knowing: most of them believe in this stuff, they don't just use it as a symbol
To the modern mind- god(s) don't exist. The world can be explained by fundamental physics, neuroscience & other exact sciences. Also so called spiritual experiences. On the other hand, there remain some things that simply don't fit in the modern scientific paradigm. One of these is Chinese oracle Yi Djing. As for religions, they are completely explicable as historical-cultural-social phenomena.
For those who can still face the the ulitmate reality you die and are recycled without consciousness then a bit of woowoo will cheer them up. Britt is now doing what all religions do. They have a need to tell others.

The failure or shortcoming of human is that even animal has better chance at survival than man in a raw world. Also, animal does not feel it is miniscule observing the vastness of the ocean. We feel we have no resilience unlike a grand towering tree that is never subject to our emotional upheaval.
So atheist spiritulism is all about finding grace, the meaning of it all without subscribing to magic. Magic might be a literary narrative tool, never the escape from our fact. Our fact is not magical and yet it has beauty, infinity and eternity.

I came here from a historical and mythological background. I started to think that humans have been animist for 300,000 years, living lives full of ritual, sybolism, and the sacred, but no gods. I wonder if i can intrduce ritual and symbolism, etc, back into my life. Godlike religion is only about 12,000 years old. We are naturally animists and feel awe and wonder at our environments. It's our natural human state. She might say all this.

I'm not really comfortable being a straight-up atheist anymore. I was at one point, but I still kept looking for something. So, I went back to church, but I'm not able to fully believe either. I'm a humanist, and it's like I am searching for something in between. There may not be anything after this life, but i do believe in the subconscious while you're alive… and i even believe that sometimes your subconscious can actually communicate with the subconscious of someone who is close to you.
Anyway, I'm going to start looking into spiritual atheism. Thank you for sharing this idea
7:26 – It doesn't help much that we live in a world where synchronicities and the odd dream premonition are a thing (I mean six digit odds plus, not unrestrained schizotypal dot connecting) and yet sympathetic magic works about as well as Dawkins or Dennett would expect. Smacks strongly of Hoffman and Prakash's style of functionalism along with John Gray's Darwinian Daoism. I would imagine as well that if someone's a Daoist or animist they're still atheists because they don't believe there's a personal god anywhere in the equation.
14:13 – I used to have what I thought were 'intrusive thoughts' as a kid, and I realized as an adult what they were. We're not taught about what our brains actually are or do, and part of our brains truing themselves up is boundary testing and making sure that if an impulse to do something comes up that there are sufficient inhibitors to stop it. Now that I know that, if anything funky comes up, I assume it's my brain testing its boundaries and functional soundness under stress – which is a good thing.

I have been a devout Atheist since as far as I could truly think for myself. 2025 broke me. I still don't believe in any God(s), but I have always found positives in religion. I recently started paying more attention to Buddhism and I am benefiting greatly from it's teachings, while ignoring any levels of dogma. I like the term Spiritual Atheist, I will be following that path from now on instead of just Atheist.
