Think of a light bulb. The light is like the soul, and the glass bulb is like the brain.
If the glass cracks or the wires inside are damaged (like in dementia or strokes), the light looks dim, flickery, or even goes out. But the electricity (soul) is still there — it hasn’t disappeared. The problem is just that the bulb (brain) can’t show it properly anymore.
So, even if someone changes completely, forgets who they are, or acts differently, it doesn’t mean their soul is gone. It’s just hidden behind the broken brain

Soul is belief, think about AI and Computers, if we dont provide them electric, they dont perform, even AI thinks like a human nowadays. Our brain provides transmitting signals, and our body has many nerves to control them, thats why we are alive and when we die, they dont perform. When we stab someone's heart, they die, why? Its cuz of body, not soul.
If you have a phone, and you drop it down the stairs and the camera gets smashed, the screen doesn’t work properly, and the phone keeps crashing and turning off…the phone might be broken, but signal from the mast remains completely unattached, unaffected and unphased 🙂

They fear the other side. We built attachment to exist but afterlife is inevitable. Science already knows that. The same happened with aliens, they denied, but now is one of their topics. Even he talks about it.
The problem is that you still have experiences, it's still you, but without the details of your previous life. Like a baby, although I don't know if this comparison is the most appropriate. Would you say that it doesn't have a soul just because it was just born?

Childish, over-simplistic idea: “I am my thoughts” “I think, therefore I am”. Humans are so much more than verbal language. Do animals not exist then because they do not have verbal language “thinking?” Modern humanism is bankrupt, Freudian and Nietzsche’s language arguments are worthless in the realm of the sub and unconscious, in the realm or emotions and behaviors when it comes to healing . When you remove the transcendent and the soul from human understanding, you get nihilism, mental illness (Nietzsche), sexual obsession (Freud) and misery, and now, an arrogant cultural path to extinction in Europe, Americas and Australia all clinging to this Psyche devoid of a soul or a connection to the Transcendent (secular atheist humanism…it is a cultural dead end!) Read Paul Tillich on the “God beyond God” (most atheists have a 5 year olds understanding of “God” as an old man in the sky- Sisteen Chapel figure which is a childs understanding) and Richard Schwartz’s Internal Family Systems understanding of the human with a Soul at the center instead of the tragic “Psyche” of Freud and Jung. Human existence is much more functional, vibrant and happy when you recognize the spiritual and transcendent and transformative power of human life and our energetic-spiritual connection to eternity and the Source of All Things: Transcendent Divinity or “God beyond 5 year old’s God.

Tyson is making things too easy for himself, I believe. Consciousness itself does not necessarily come from neural activity alone. The human brain and it's neural activity show correlates of cognitive processes, but do not explain the source of this process. It could be initiated by the consciousness, which leads to neural activity, or the nervous system is autonomous and consciousness is just an illusion. We don't know. Even serious neuroscientists say that brain activity and consciousness correlate with each other, not that one only necessarily causes the other. Another thing is the first person perspective and the ME. The process of neural activity itself does not explain a first person perpective that gives us the feeling of experiencing the outside world from within as a single person. If matter itself is not conscious, or doesn't contain anything that creates consciousness, once it emerges, then it should be scientifically impossible for matter to emerge to any level of consciousness at all. Transmition of Information, Intelligence, calculation, etc. can all be explained materialistically, but not the consciousness – the "something" that experiences the world in first person – itself. My computer, my smartphone, even complex AI programs are capable of all these things too, but they do not EXPERIENCE the information they receive. And since he mentioned dementia (losing memory, the ability to speak, etc.)… There are a lot of medical reports of people being terminally fully lucid of their memories, start recognizing their family again and regain the ability to speak before they die. This cannot be entirely explained by neuroscience. A minor regain of these abilities could be possible, but not on such a high level with such a high quality. The consciousness seems to be more than we already know. So in my opinion, it would be way to shortsighted, if we took consciousness for a simple firework of neural activity. If nature and our own consciousness was so easy to understand, we would have long managed to fully understand it, which we haven't. I would recommend everyone to try "The Hard problem of consciousness" by David Chalmers.

My mother told me she saw angels in her room. She was visited by her parents and other those who passed before her. I would asked why she was always looking at the ceiling, she said there were people there she did not recognize. She had a peaceful death. I miss her and I wish I would enter heaven so I could be with her again.

One of the core strengths of science is that it enables us to build models of what we perceive as the real world and use those models to predict the future.
One of the core weaknesses of science is the supposition that our models reflect reality. Along side that lies the belief that because we cannot perceive a thing, that the thing does not exist.
Our best scientists take pains not to fall into that trap. Dr. Tyson generally doesn't do to badly in this regard. Note that he says he remains unconvinced. He is wise enough not to commit.
