Examining The Near-Death Experience Of Eben Alexander

“Patterns of Supernatural Phenomena” Episode 19 – Proof of Heaven?

One of the most famous ’s in history is Dr. Eben Alexander’s chronicled in “Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the ” . Proof of Heaven reached the top 10 list in USA Today’s 150 top selling titles. It has also reached number 1 on New York Times’ best selling paperback nonfiction books, number 3 on Los Angeles Times best sellers and is included on Amazon Best Sellers of 2012. Proof of Heaven was featured in Newsweek and Alexander’s story was presented on ABC news Nightline. While Dr. Alexander has been praised, he also come under attack from elements of the medical community, Sam Harris and Esquire magazine, all of whom contend his experience wasn’t , that he misrepresented the facts or outright lied and attempt to debunk Proof of Heaven.

Here at “Patterns of Supernatural Phenomena” we accept that Dr. Alexander truly experienced something incredible and life-changing. We do not doubt the supernatural experience of the was something beyond a chemical experience of the brain or the result of his cortex returning to full function at the outset of his coma. Our examination believes Dr. Alexander’s experience but examines it in the light orthodox Biblical truth. This episode is based on “Proof of Heaven? : A Mental Illusionist Examines the Experience of Eben Alexander M.D. from a Biblical Viewpoint” by Coleman Luck (The Equalizer, Gabriel’s Fire, The Burning Zone).

Beginning with a description of Alexander’s experience, from the “earthworm-eye’s view” womb of feces and vomit up the strange world of light and the visit with OM, Coleman looks at the nature of experience, the truth claims made and compares them to the Bible. Jesus Christ is no where mentioned in “Proof of Heaven” and the repeated submergence of Dr. Alexander in the mud womb is more akin to brainwashing or a shamanistic experience than Christian understanding of Heaven, God, the afterlife or truth. A discussion of Om’s ideas on evil and freewill are discussed and compared to C.S. Lewis

This lecture makes sense until I remember 45 years ago long before the internet, my new boss on second day of work told me his story of being electrocuted outdoors in a rain storm. His wife and oldest daughter were putting up a tall tv antenna when it fell into a high power line, instantly electrocuting all 3 for over a minute. His oldest son saw what was happening from a distance. He ran to help but as he approached he too was electrocuted as the wet ground itself was electrified. He fell into the others and knocked the tv pole away from power line. As the others came out of knocked out conditions and shock, the boy appeared dead, and they began to pray as in their Pentecostal way. As they looked up they saw themselves surrounded by angels. In looking down they saw their son back to life. I don’t know of any church that tells such stories of such events happening in modern times…I myself have witness miraculous things associated with people who have died. Again, our churches don’t teach these modern things happening. …Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, but we don’t know what Lazarus experienced, so we go on faith that nothing happened except his death, which happened twice. Uhm.

I'm amazed by the Grace and goodness that Jesus has given me. The NDE talked about in the video is such a hideous deception. It tells people what they want to hear and if accepted, keeps them from seeing the truth. I'm appreciating all of tbe episodes and appreciate your work!

This book was the first book that got me into the new age before I came to Christ. It deceived me, and I’ve always wondered if a Christian had a biblical answer for this subjective experience. Thank you for unraveling the lies.

The Devil is a liar and a deceiver. There is no lie in The LivingGog,praise the lord glory to is blessed name. The doctor was not in the presence of God.

the wonderfull thing is we can think what we like, but one day we will know the truth as we will see our creator Father face to face and then no lie can stand.

Your comparing Eben's experience with the bible? That's a sin right there. Sin is only against the church. One doesn't commit sin against the Divine. Religion/Christianity should stay away from near death and past life experiences. Fear, hell, sin, judgement…has NO place in the Divine. It does with man, because the bible was written by man, for man. Why it has all the traits of man. Transgressions/Sin vengeance/revenge. Hate/hell… When religion gets involved with NDE's, there ignorance is exposed. There deceptions becomes apparent. Just stick with bible quotes. Humanity expects that much from it.

Alexander: I will occasionally use the pronoun 'Aum' to refer to God.

    Me: Uh-oh… 🤣🤦‍♀️😳

About your critique of the necessity of evil: I think your vacc!ne metaphor for the Blood of Jesus breaks down here, because the way most vacc!nes work is literally a little bit of "evil" (a dead or weakened virus) to do the body good and allow it to "advance" by training it to make specific antibodies. I mean, I guess the point is that in Jesus' blood we have sin's defeat, somewhat akin to a dead virus vs. a live, thriving one. But I dunno… to me it's clunky.

    Great video, as always.
