The Awakening of Human Consciousness | Forbidden Fungus(STRIPPED)
Something extraordinary happened to the human brain 100,000 years ago. In just a few thousand generations, our brains nearly doubled in size – a change that should have taken millions of years.
Scientists couldn’t explain it until Terence McKenna proposed a radical theory. He believed early humans transformed into conscious beings not through fire or tools, but through eating a forbidden fungus growing in animal dung across Africa.

19:37 maybe not… if you go through a lot of starvation, it hardens your cells and this can be passed to your kids. This is proven
Mushrooms are truly amazing. Life changing experience.
idk how I missed this episode until now?! stoked you covered this!!!
By far the best Stripped episode! Definitely could use an extended version. Phenomenal work guys!
Trees speak with each other using fungi also.
I saw my own consciousness in everything on LSD. Best way to describe it, imagine a "topographic map" with the swirling, twisting, and meandering lines. Now imagine it 3D, but constantly moving, twisting, and warping into itself.
It was everywhere, in everything. I look at something? It's shaping it. I thought about something, it created the visualization.
Took me a minute to realize it was me somehow visualizing my own conscious thinking. Weird
Stone ape theory! i love me some Terrence
The stoned ape theory.
after skool does a fun video on this animated whiteboard
Instead of fluoride let’s put this stuff in water hahaha
I would like this guy less if i thought he actually believed this stuff. But boy! are his presentations interesting. He is a storyteller.
Anyone that's done mushrooms knows this and untill you've done them you have no idea😊
Mushrooms 🍄 changed my life. Its the only substances where you feel better for weeks after taking it.
hecklefish must have been stoned, so serious and didn't say a peep!
Mushrooms are why I was able to quit drinking. Just woke up one day and didn't want it anymore. And I used to drink all day everyday. Almost quit smoking cigarettes too. Got down from a pack a day to a pack a week.
Evolution is a direct change in environment.
I think that it’s a possible theory with lots of evidence that back it
Perhaps, from a symbiotic viewpoint, how does the expansion of human consciousness benefit these particular genera of mushrooms? There exist many species of fungi who use or alter the behavior of complex organisms for the benefit of the fungi. Another question: underground mycelial organisms are the largest and oldest complex organisms on Earth; in some very different way, are they conscious?
I’m not familiar with the theory that was disproven, but just a thought, if the neurons in the brain were rewired and made lasting impacts, would the new neural networks have no possibility of being passed down? I mean I’m not very knowledgeable about genes and stuff but I feel like the brain structure of 2 parents would be passed down. Isn’t that why people have higher chances of mental illness if their parents or family have it? The chemicals and neurons and their pathways in the brain?
I would love to here a break down on the historical discovery of ketamine in the 40's and 50's and how it affects the brain.
Hey AJ. did you know the engineer on USS Discovery and who handled the spore drive was named Paul Stamets ?
Mushrooms have helped me too. The clarity and emotional release they can offer is something traditional meds never gave me.
I have to recommend the book "The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross."
Indeed expanded minds are not passed down; one must experience it directly.
I highly support plant and fungi life.
This was really interesting.. but now I have so many questions… 🤔
Mushroom in Hecklefish's bowl. 😂

If it’s so beneficial why blocking it? Government won’t be able to control society without the fear of death.
Hi. Im lovin the episodes on "Consciousness". My husband Jon and I, started on this "Consciousness" journey together at the end of last year. Were meditating daily and trying to get to the point of "Manifesting"/"Manifestation" or creating what we want by thinking about it. As a matter of fact, that is how we found Why Files, by using You Tube. Anyway, "True Inner Consciousness" is a hard state to reach, but I know that it's definitely possible and a true reality if we make it that for ourselves. I've been telling my husband Jon, that I feel like our brains are Quantum Computers, but we use them; and Im just as guilty as anyone else, but we use our brains like they are an old flip phone that doesn't even access the internet. We are soooo powerful. TY for these episodes. And all the other episodes too. Jon and I love them. Keep them coming.
Maybe the mushrooms opened the mind made us compassionate and connect more. That may have brought us out of a survival based thinking where like regular animals are wild. But yes it can't be passed through genetics but teachings of parents better ways. We are still angry wild but tamed like a dog. That is how we improved so much.

Psilocin (the active metabolite of psilocybin in “magic mushrooms”) does fit into human serotonin receptors—especially the 5-HT2A receptor—quite well. That fact can sound almost “designed,” but it’s actually a pretty good example of how chemistry + evolution + physics overlap in non-mystical ways.
Psilocin is also an indole tryptamine, meaning it shares the same core chemical “scaffold” as serotonin. That’s the key point:
they are not unrelated molecules that randomly fit— they are structural cousins.
So the odds are not astronomically low; they’re actually fairly predictable given:
• The receptor’s binding pocket is designed for indoleamines
• Nature produces many indole-containing compounds
• Small modifications can preserve “fit” while changing function
Intelligence is exponential
roland fisher, didnt test visual aquity. it brain size wasnt a short quick thing either, it took 2 million years, and we arent the only species, infact lots of species did the same thing.
