Great discussion! Thanks
This was fun! You asked great questions. Looking forward to talking to you again.
Yeah, I think the reason why so many Western philosophers and scientists still endure in believing that free will exists must have something to do with Christianity. I can’t think of any other reason for this fanatic belief among so many Western intellectuals that free will somehow must exist no matter what.
Does he believe that Jesus walked on water and rose from the dead? Does he believe in God? If not, in what sense is he a Christian? What is his theology? What is his ontology of the universe?
I am extremely skeptical of this claim that there’s something unique about Christianity. If you listen to someone like Richard Carrier, expert in the New Testament and early Christianity, he claims that Jesus probably never existed as a real historical person at all, but started out as a very powerful arch-angel basically, whose crucifixion, death and resurrection all originally happened in the sky, not on earth. Christianity was thereby according to Carrier basically the Jewish version of the many mystery cults that were popular in the hellenistic Mediterranean world in that time period. This originally purely mythological figure Jesus Christ then later was euhemerized and put on Earth as a real historical person in the Gospels, becoming an apocalyptic prophet wandering around in Palestine preaching about the end times. This process of euhemerization was quite common in fact.
Does any of this affect his Christian faith in any way or is it irrelevant?
I would argue that "spiritual but not religious" originates in Alcoholics Anonymous, and that they effectively have subjective differences in spiritual beliefs grounded within a community.
Conservative, formerly leftist Gen-X-er here. I've been highly interested in left-right politics for decades. I am not formally trained in philosophy, but I have a philosophical mindset.
Occasionally I hear leftist academics hand-wave objections to Marxism, such as 57:40: "When [Jordan Peterson] talks about Marxism and political issues, he's completely out of his depth." Honest question: What depth are you pointing to? Short of "the sum of Marxist scholarship since The Communist Manifesto", what can I read to begin to understand what the speaker is referring to here?
I've often heard Marxists allude to a deep set of ideas that conservatives fail to grasp, but, in my experience, they always stop short of actually specifying or explaining the gap. This is not a snarky comment–I am genuinely interested. What is the gap? What is it about Marxism/leftistm/insert-label-here that conservatives are failing to understand?
This is a good faith request for clarification.
There is no problem with it.
religion is man made, arranged to control and greed based organization.
spirituality is natural, INDIVIDUAL, private and liberating.
The main reason people describe themselves as "spiritual but not religious" is because the contradictions inherent in religion (but especially the abrahamic faiths) are insurmountable. If one takes the falsifiable claims of these faiths seriously, the vast majority can be demonstrated to be false. This leads to a spiritual and often times extistential crisis of sorts.
Those that still see some good from spirituality end up separaring the religious dogma away from spirtual expression. This can lead to other problems, some of which y'all touched on, but I think the biggest risk is being "unmoored" and floating between teachings without doing the personal work and sacrifice that is nessisary for growth.
In the best case, people see the contemplative path inside of all religions that has more in common with one another than their parent faiths, similar to the argument in Huxley's Perennial Philosophy. The contemplative path has a very different set of values, none more apperent than when it comes to ethics/morality.
That is my take as an evangelical seminary grad that left the faith and became a secular buddhist and went from being conservative via libertarianism to leftist politics over a couple of decades.
You lost me when you said Andrew had 2 IQ, you're clearly not genuine and you've ironically exemplified why politics is truly trash these days and no one seems to be genuine just smiling and saying falsehoods to make themselves look better. I think I'm done.
I do.
Both of you seem to be completely blind to the core of leftism. So Hitler didn’t launch a class war. He launched a war against everything that wasn’t normie white Christian against the so-called woke that both you and Tony are completely dismissive of. You live in a unidimensional world where the only problems that exist are economical .Racism, sexism, bigotry and all the rest of societal ills up to and including genocide, things that are way more impactful than economics, are just distractions that get in the way of the "real politics".
It's so wild that people truly believe that a supernatural creator of all existence thought the best way to "save" humans was by cosmically grooming an ancient Middle Eastern virgin to give birth to a Jewish man-god so it could perform the ultimate sacrifice of itself to itself and if you don't believe this story and give worship then your afterlife is damned for all eternity…so lame😅
As someone who was born and raised Evangelical Non Denominational who was also MAGA and a bit Groyper adjacent and has since dropped that nonsense since converting to Eastern Orthodox Christianity ☦️ this was a very fun and interesting conversation.
I will push back on Tony’s assertion that Orthodoxy and Catholicism are a bit more alike than to Protestantism. From our side of the fence Catholicism is more similar to Protestantism than to us, with Protestantism merely being a theologically democratized Catholicism to the masses (Protestants merely destroyed the exoteric layers of Catholicism but maintained its internal theology such as Filioque, Original Sin, etc)
Tony Is that the Matt Baker "Useful Charts" World History Chart in the background!
Nice 💗👍 Approved
I got that one to, plus the World Religion Chart, and I can stare at them for hours they are so beautiful and intresting, I never get tired of them!
1dime is great
Also atheist edgelords in the comments are peak dementia
50:33 Well, exceptions can exist and be tolerated… this is certainly not my experience in the fundamentalist type of religion that I was raised within and here in lies the problematic aspect of religion and Christianity specifically ( although in my own life experience as well, I can say the same for Islam as well.)
No one cares that you don't care about their subjective beliefs, so this whole discussion is kind of pointless.
The thing about Christian Atheism is that it’s not how Christianity actually manifests in the world. It is primarily an internet phenomenon that 99.99% of practicing Christians would reject. People are in church to affirm their circle of meaning, not to confront their alienation. Like Tony said, most people aren’t interested and/or capable of tarrying with the negative.
I think religion, or better yet a interpersonal program of societal rituals that give appreciation to what we have etc, is great.
The problems people have with religion I think, especially regarding Abrahamic religions, is the ties to the Mediterranean and mores regarding the body that seem to curse it.
10:49 'bunch of wankers' if this guy isn't Australian, I'm a ham sandwich….🙂👍
Religious but not spiritual. Thats just politics. And objective beliefs do not exist.
Religion is all about obedience. True Spirituality is acting with Justice and Charity.
Tony is literally the GOAT
Tony has become one of the smartest guys. Which I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect when 1dime started a few years ago (I thought he was just another left-tube “content creator” or something). Thankfully, I was wrong!
Calling it now: The new craze is going to be “religious but not spiritual.” I think people are starting to crave the structure that it used to provide, regardless if they can actually bring themselves to “genuinely” swallow the creation myth (or miracles) or not.
