3 months agoPerhaps those Scandinavian scholars are not trying to excuse it (maybe they are, I don't know), but are trying to say "Slavery existed in ALL peoples across ALL of history – hell, it even still exists today in Africa. But some forms of slavery was worse than others. Some had absolute lifelong backbreaking work, no chance of ever winning one's freedom, no payment, and no rights. Others had slaves that were paid, that were allowed to buy themselves better clothes and gear (let alone walk in public and shop), were seen as a part of the household, and could work a few years to regain their freedom. All slavery was bad and inhumane, but some was much worse than others."
Being ashamed for the past is silly, because every single people did something evil or cruel to others. Nowadays it's all the rage to hate on native Europeans as the worst thing that ever happened to the world, but no one ever says a word on how Africans or Amerindians or Indians or Chinese treated other peoples, whether similar to them or not. Not a word. It's all "white man bad". History is full of slavery, torture, genocide and domination. Everyone has ancestors that were the oppressor, and everyone has ancestors that were slaves. Just get over it.

3 months agoI have to get really irritated when you call Sami "indigenous people". Scandinavians are the indigenous people of Scandinavia. Sami are only native to Lapland, and are much more recent newcomers than we are. Our ancestors have been here for ten thousand years, the Sami have been here for a period of time no one can agree on, but at most 2000-5000 years.
The Swedish crown/state oppressed them, but it also oppressed their own people, of the same race, forced them to be Christian, forced them to speak Rikssvenska (instead of whatever dialect they had – we're lucky Elfdalian still exists), forced them to pay taxes – everyone was a subject to the state or crown, what difference does it make because one group of people were of a different race?
"Oh, subjecting reindeer-herding (which they've only been doing for a few centuries by the way) Lappi to religious conversions, destructions of their traditions and practices, and making them speak Swedish, that's awful! But subjecting cow-herding southern Swedes to the exact same thing, that's fine!"
That's essentially what people are saying when they say "the Sami were oppressed and that's so awful". And to repeat… Scandinavians are indigenous Scandinavians, simple as that.

3 months agoIt's a pity they had to censor something like the swast!ka, but with it, they wouldn't have been able to show the film in Germany. It's that crazy.
The symbol wasn't misused by the NSDAP, it has been turned into a symbol of "hate" by the post-WW2 establishment, as they try to drag our entire history, identity and culture through the mud. The only people who use the symbol to signify hate are some skinhead losers who buy into the very myth created by the post-WW2 ruling class.

3 months agoHi Arith, I enjoyed this, very rich with so much information relevant to the movie and my own personal interests. I enjoyed the movie but it will be good to watch it again with more context, glad they put so much attention to sourcing realistic motifs. Oh one thing I was wondering is if you know of any information on the symbols in the Slavic embroidery on many of the clothes. I hope that traditional garment makers and embroiderers were involved in the costume design, truly an artform in itself but all the better when skilled crafstpeople are involved in authentic ways. Ty and yes interested in any followup vids you create. xox

3 months ago10:00 if you state with ravens. Weird I’ve had a couple of them cawing at me first thing in the morning as soon as I walk out the door. Then there was some different type of bigger black birds that I couldn’t identify that did the same thing to me last evening. Felt like directed straight at me. But I have no clue.

3 months agoHi Arith, I enjoyed your review however, I must argue with your assertion that berserkers would not raid a fortified town, naked! I would like to introduce you to the Contemporary war in Liberia and the warlord ‘General Butt Naked’ whose army of youths fought against machine guns, completely nude! Stories abounded that bullets bounced off their magically charged bodies.
This was achieved through dark, ancient rituals, sacrifice and cannabalism. His battalion was the most feared during the civil war.
Others wore women’s clothes in to attain supernatural strength, power and protection from the ancestors

3 months agoO love this movie and the other Eggers' movies precisely because he respects his subject matter as people from another time with different mindsets than modern people without the need to portray the hero as some enlightened modern human cultural hero fighting of the old senseless superstitions…I've never seen in a movie anything like those Valkerie scenes and I'm very much bewitched by the sight and other worldliness of it

3 months agoYou say it took you several hours to see the film. It took me 3 or 4 sessions to get through this video. You say you will see it again to enjoy it. After your video I will watch the film again for the perspectives you have given us. (you do realize your video was about as long as the film, right? – he he). So much packed in both. Well done.
I did think when I saw the film that unless someone had some familiarity with the sources it might just be a jumbled action film to them, if they came with none.
I for one would be interested in hearing you expound on the funeral scene, and anything else you couldn't in this "brief" one😜.
Always glad to help with the algorythm! Keep up the good work.

With what is going on now here in the states many many people need to be reminded of all of this.

3 months agoI love your videos a ton. So informative and I'm ever so happy to find someone who actually cites their works. As much as I am for UPGs and Neo-Pagan practices, I much rather have solid basis in history which leaves a more stable understanding of ancestral knowledge. That way I can build upon it and continue it more faithfully.
